591 (ANTRIM) ARMY FIELD COY R.E.
OPERATION ORDER 54B (2nd ISSUE)
(Issued in supersession of 54B (1st issue)



INFORMATION
1.   In the event of invasion, the 591 Field Coy is responsible for preparing charges on petrol INSTALLATIONS and for    placing and firing charges on Ipswich bridges and on coastal demolition already prepared.
2.   The Coy is also required as a reserve R.E. Unit under command of C.R.E. less one Section in support of 225 Infantry Brigade.

INTENTION
3.   Officer Commanding Sections will organise and rehearse parties for the execution of tasks allotted, bearing in mind that the maximum reserve of man power and vehicles will be maintained.

METHOD
4.   All detachments on works or billetted out will return to WOODBRIDGE on STAND TO.
5.   No.5 Section will be in readiness to act in support of 223 Infantry Brigade. A liaison NCO will be sent to their H.Q. on STAND TO
6.   Allotment of demolitions and orders for firing are given in Appendix I.
7.   Instructions for and allotment of destruction of PETROL INSTALLATIONS is given in Appendix II.
8.   All parties detailed for work in App.I & II will return to WOODBRIDGE immediately on completion.
9.   The defence of MELTON GRANGE strong point will be organised by the Coy 2nd i/c and will be put in operation on ACTION STATIONS by R.E. personnel assembled at WOODBRIDGE.
10.   Summary of action to be taken on STAND TO and ACTION STATIONS is stated in Appendix III.

1. CLASSIFICATION
A(1)         To be blown on ACTION STATIONS being confirmed by O.C. 591 Field Coy R.E.
B.            Firing parties to remain on site. Orders to demolish to be given by 225 Infantry Brigade.
C(Ipswich) Firing parties to remain on site. Orders to demolish to be given by Commander Ipswich Garrison.

2. FIRING ORDERS
NCOs in charge of B and C class demolitions will have written Firing Orders on A.F. W4012B. In none of these cases will demolitions be blown in the face of the enemy.

3. ROUTES
Officer Commanding Sections will prepare routes for mobile firing parties limited to two lorries and 2 Motor cycles per section.

4. CHARGES AND PRIMERS
Primers and fuses for depth chares will be kept ready made up with G1098 explosives.
Spares will be held. Prepared bridge charges are kept in the 'summer house' demolition stores with the exception of Ipswich bridges which charges are stored in Ipswich magazine.

(a) Unit pumps will immobilised nightly. The pumps will be sealed only if the Coy is leaving WOODBRIDGE and no Unit is moving in. If possible H.Q. 223 Infantry Brigade will be consulted.
Sequence of destruction arrangements at PETROL DEPOTS
Prior to STAND TO charges and firing circuits will be stored with Section G1098 explosives. Home Guard will be instructed how to fire.

On STAND TO, firing circuits will be laid in duplicate.

On ACTION STATIONS, charges and junction boxes will be placed in position.

After INVASION ha taken place, or is being attempted in the near vicinity, detonators and primers will be put in position and firing circuits connected.

As soon as detonators are in position, Home Guard take ove and R.E. personnel return to WOODBRIDGE.
No.1 Section will understudy No.2 Section's role.

APPENDIX III

PRIOR TO STAND TO
Inspections and instructions to firing parties in accordance with 591 Operation Instruction 54A.
Similar action will be taken regarding Petrol Depot schemes.
Scheme for the defence of the GRANGE and HILLCOURT.
Nightly immobilization of Unit Petrol Pumps and M.T. Vehicles.

ON STAND TO
All detachments reassemble at WOODBRIDGE and are confined to billets.
Section Commanders will inspect arrangements for all demolitions and report to O.C. Coy correct or otherwise.
Rehearse execution of demolition of bridges, Depth Charges, Canadian Craters and Petrol Depots, inspect charges and return to WOODBRIDGE, if so ordered by O.C. Coy.
Rehearse defensive arrangements af GRANGE and HILLCOURT.
Two A.A. guns to be permanently manned in billet area.
No.5 Section sends liaison N.C.O. to 225 Infantry Brigade.
No.3 Section will confirm defensive arrangements for B demolitions with 5 Battalion Home Guard.

ON ACTION STATIONS
O.C. gives orders for firing parties going out.
All demolitions are blown. B & C firing parties remain on sites.
Charges placed on Petrol Depots.
Defensive patrols commence in billet area.
Coy 2nd in Comand organises rations for outlying firing parties.
O.C. Sections send representatives to visit Infantry and H.Q. to ensure they understand and are carrying out satisfactorily their demolotion roles.
H.Q. Section will send one D.R. to report and remain at H.Q. Div. R.E. at THORNHAM PARK.
