Transfered to the squadron just prior to Operation Varsity. He wanted to be a Para but had yet to undergo parachute training, so traveled to Germany by glider, only for the glider to be released short and landing in Holland. He rejoined the squadron by road, with the rest of his glider contigent. Upon arrival, he was informed by Sapper B McDonough, that his twin brother Billy had just been killed.
